Ten Weeks

Our Liam is indeed growing up too fast! At his check last week he weighed in at 11 lbs. 6oz. He jumped from the 25th percentile to the 50th! Is it bad that I want him to stay in the lower end of the spectrum so that he can stay small for longer?!?! Honestly I do love that he is growing at a super healthy rate. His cheeks have gotten juicer and his little chin is adorable...more to smooch on! Lately he has discovered his fist...namely inserting it entirely in his mouth. Ryan hates this! I read that it is good, because it helps him self-sooth, but Ryan thinks it is the gateway to thumb sucking. Neither of us were thumb suckers, but it ranks high on Ryan's fears for our children. So every time he sees Liam happily gnawing away, Ryan quickly swaps it out for his pacifier. This is our last week in our current home...Liam's first...it will be emotional for me only for his sake. I know Liam could care less and will automatically adapt, but the life changing memories we had together as a family of three will be emotionally noted.

What's wrong with thumb-sucking? I mean yes it's a problem when they're 8 years old but as a baby? Isn't it the same as a pacifier?

It is a habit forming activity, so Ryan never wants to HAVE to break him of it...if Liam starts thumb sucking it could impair his palate development. My research indicates that babies sucking on their entire fist is a sign of self-soothing and is not directly linked to future thumb sucking, but Ry doesn't want to take any chances.
